What is the Building Management System

BMS architecture

A BMS generally consists of the following elements:
  • Sensors
Sensors are devices that collect data throughout the building. This data can include information on temperatures, humidity or even room occupancy.
  • Controllers
They are like the brain of the building automation system. Based on the data collected from the sensors in the system, the controller decides the best course of action to keep the building operating in accordance with the preferences that were decided when the BMS was installed.
  • Output devices
After the controllers collect the data and decide what settings to make, the output devices execute the commands. These can include relays and triggers.
  • User interface
The user interface is how you interact with the building automation system by monitoring reported data and accessing the BMS to change settings if desired. It can usually be accessed remotely via a mobile device such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

Benefits of BMS

  • Energy saving
A well-designed building management system architecture can generate energy savings of up to 30%, as well as lower maintenance requirements. A BMS allows you to control and monitor all the electricity used to heat, cool and light a building and run its equipment. With this real-time information, you have the opportunity to respond quickly to changes in energy demand. Additionally, a BMS can improve air quality and employee comfort, adjust humidity and ventilation, adapt lighting, and ensure proactive maintenance.
  • Improved building safety and security
An integrated building security system will ensure that the building’s occupants remain safe and that its structure, resources, and assets are well protected. A BMS system enables building traffic control, fire and smoke detection, reducing the risk of criminal activity, and protecting against hacking.
  • Reduced operating costs
By creating an optimized environment, you increase staff productivity and reduce your building’s operating and maintenance costs.]]>
